Echinacea

Also known as purple coneflower, besides being a beautiful addition to the garden, Echinacea is one of the most popular herbal supplements on the market. Once used by Native Americans to treat snakebites, toothaches, sore throats, and coughs, Echinacea has long been deemed an immune-boosting herb. Many studies have been done on Echinacea, and it seems that it has the ability to stimulate the production of white blood cells, which fight infection and dispose of toxins in the body. It is suggested that Echinacea be taken at intervals, a couple of weeks on and a couple of weeks off, as the body will eventually develop an insensitivity to the immune-boosting effects of this herb, others seem to find it to be fairly innocuous. The best thing to do is give it a try and see how it works for your own particular immune system.

Echinacea, which grows wild on the Midwestern prairies, is available in tinctures, capsule, and tea form. It can be taken to ward off illness as well as to shorten the duration of sickness once begun. Echinacea is safe for children and makes a great supplement during the cold and flu season.
