Also known as rattlesnake or squawroot, this perennial herb (Cimicifuga racemosa) is native to the United States. Hearsay has it that the root contains an antidote for rattlesnake poison. Proven to be extremely effective in relieving menopausal symptoms, black cohosh is available as a tea, tincture, and capsule. Avoid during pregnancy, as black cohosh can bring on uterine contractions. Do not use this herb while nursing.
To brew the tea, steep 1 teaspoonful of the chopped dried root in 1 cup boiling water for 15 minutes.
