Pinion Nut

The low-lying pinion tree grows in the southwestern United States and produces small pinecones that enclose the pinion nuts. These are very similar in taste and appearance to the pignoli nut of the Mediterranean, but they are far easier to extract from their cone. Pinions are not widely marketed, however, due mainly to the irregular productivity of the tree.
