There are many different types of hawthorn bushes and trees throughout the temperate zones of the earth. They bear berries (or haws) that are usually red and rarely eaten by humans – though they are popular with wildlife. Some types make good jam. Hawthorn berry tea is high in vitamin C and therefore good for colds. It has been used to alleviate heart conditions, improve circulation, and lower high blood pressure (the bark, too, is sometimes used).
The thorny hawthorn is said to have made up the crown of Christ. French peasants used to claim they could hear the hawthorn tree moan and cry on Good Fridays.
